The decades-old concept of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) has immense potential!
The VPP Immense Potential

I just watched an insightful video featuring Geoff Ferrell, Senior VP at sonnen, Inc., exploring the future of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) and their role in energy management on the Modo Energy podcast.

Geoff Ferrell shared eye-opening insights on how VPPs are transforming our energy systems. Like a swarm of bees, VPPs consist of millions of battery nodes in homes and businesses, working together to stabilize the grid. At grid scale, these batteries act like a massive power plant, providing reliable energy without relying on daily behavior changes.

The word “virtual” is misleading, VPPs are real assets, providing essential support to our energy systems. I like to think of it as “batteries” being like the cells in our body: each one storing and releasing energy to keep the entire system efficient and responsive. The grid would greatly benefit from users having batteries, making energy distribution as nimble and efficient as our bodies.
Battery storage is truly the backbone of VPP success, and I believe it’s key to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
